Air Guitar, Sure… but Air Soprano Sax?
Great bands almost always bend the boundaries of genre, but every once in a while, a group comes along that not only defies categorization, it renders the whole subject definitively beside the point. Enter: Los Pikadientes de Caborca (roughly: The Toothpicks of Caborca, Mexico).
To the growing consternation of my proximate cohorts, the band’s single, “La Cumbia del Río,” has taken over my player, but in the wider world, the ridiculously silly ditty has amassed a growing following, particularly among the type of people who get a kick out of uploading video of their own home dance moves. And what really speaks to the outrageous contagion of this tune is the sheer variety of its dance interpretations. Cases in point: the breakdance, the drunken roadside shuffle, and the horizontal kitchen cumbia. My favorite, though, is this one:
I doubt Kenny G ever inspired this kind of reverent mimicry, but do please correct me if I'm wrong.
Meanwhile, when Los Pikadientes' album comes out next month, I for one hope it takes off with enough momentum to render the band a major flash in the pan, at the very least.
