Mirah and So You Think You Can Dance

Since a few of your editors-- myself included-- are big fans of Mirah, we lined up a free song from her b-sides collection The Old Days Feeling to give to Amazon MP3 customers the week of the album's release so we might introduce more folks to an artist we love. While it certainly made more people aware of her work, I don't think "Lone Star" engendered any warm feelings, seeing as how its 1.5 star cumulative customer rating makes it one of the most despised songs on the site.

Now, I could understand being chuffed if you'd been misled into giving up your hard-earned $.89 for a song that was lower-fi than you usually like, but for a free song to inspire that much ire, well, I just assumed the average guy or gal is just never going to be that into Mirah.

Shockingly, though, a seven year old Mirah song and album are moving their way up our charts today. Currently, her masterpiece album, Advisory Committee, sits at #29 on our charts, while a cut from that album, "The Garden," has climbed all the way up to #14.

Why?

Someone on America's favorite excuse to stay in and watch people gyrate because it's too hot to leave the house, So You Think You Can Dance, decided to make two of the competition's top six dancers do a jazz routine to one of my favorite artists. Behold:

That apparently spurred kids to run to their laptops, download some excellent tunes, and prove that Mirah is accessible enough for your average TV watcher to enjoy. Thanks, So You Think You Can Dance! Now, for the rest of the season, I'll make a sincere effort not to pout when my girl decides we need to watch you instead of finishing off the last season of The Wire. You've earned it.

"Now, I could understand being chuffed if you'd been misled..."

Is there another meaning for the word "chuffed"? I just know the British slang term, which means "really pleased".
