Lily Allen's So Good It's Scary
I'm not one to jump on the latest pop tune--I'm much more inclined to get excited about free jazz, black metal, or world music. However, I fell in love with Lily Allen's undeniably pop-tastic, smart, and cheeky debut album Alright, Still when it came out in 2007, and from the sound of her new single, "The Fear" (available for download on Amazon MP3 next Tuesday, Dec. 9), this will be no sophomore slump. Witness the fantastical video goodness (if you've got sensitive ears, you may want to check out the clean version instead):

I like it. I'm not going to get self-analytical about it, or feel the need to justify my opinion, BUT just for the record NORMALLY I don't like top 40, and I'm not TYPICALLY the first to jump on a pop song. I just am throwing that out there. Anyway, great song. Lilly is a riot and she certainly puts many of her rather pedestrian American counterparts to shame.

I am totally with you Alan. I am not afraid of the Top 40. Sometimes you want to eat cotton candy, and sometimes you want a gourmet meal by a renowned chef. Junk food tastes good because it's specially formulated to do so. Music is no different. Embrace it!

Yes, it's true. I'm not afraid of pop top 40. But...just because I don't talk about Salah Ragab http://www.amazon.com/Egyptian-Jazz/dp/B001J19V7C or Krallice http://www.amazon.com/Krallice/dp/B001CKJE54 like I do Lily Allen, isn't because I don't get way more excited by those releases and those genres. In fact, I'd say I'm much more inclined to get excited by a non-mainstream discovery like those bands than something like Lily Allen (OMG, I DID say that). I don't talk about them as much because I understand they're difficult for a lot of people to listen to, and Jeff, I'm sure you would hate them. Lily Allen however, is for the world--'specially this song, which rules.
All that being said. Jeff, you're right. Ahem...
I'd like to take this opportunity to officially come out of the closet: I like David Archuleta (so cute!), Miley Cyrus (OMG SUPERtalented), AND the Jonas Brothers (obvs). It's the 12 year old girl in me, and I will never deny her again.
I feel a lot better now ;-P

Um, I don't have anything to say about Lily Allen, but I'm calling shenanigans on this statement: "I'm much more inclined to get excited about free jazz, black metal, or world music."
We all know who was riding for David Archuleta and Miley Cyrus not that long ago. It's okay to come out of the pop closet. Honest!

It IS scary. She sounds like a Bret Easton Ellis-type sociopath singing la-di-da, "I don't know what's right and what's real...anymore" with a shrug. Next stop: Crazyville. But, I like it--it's a nice attempt at adding honesty to pop music.

OMG! Christmas came early this year. Thanks for making my day, Alan. I am soooo excited for her new album.
