Remastering the Beatles: An Interview with Abbey Road Engineers Allan Rouse and Paul Hicks

Mono, stereo, or both?  Or, to put it simply: how do you want to listen to your Beatles?

If you're a Beatles fan, chances are you know what I mean.  I'm referring to the Beatles remasters, which are slated for worldwide release on 09/09/09.  Along with the individual albums, there will be two box sets released: a mono box set and a stereo box set.  Ever since this news hit the 'Net, our Beatles discussion forums have been buzzing with activity.  Most people want to know the following: how will the remasters sound, what exactly went into the remastering process, and what are the key differences between the mono and stereo versions?

We were wondering the same thing, so our resident sound expert and Beatles aficionado Hugo Munday sat down with Abbey Road engineers Allan Rouse and Paul Hicks to learn more about the remasters and how they were produced.  Check out the interview below--it's a pretty cool listen for any Beatles fan.

Well personally there's nothing to re master in here... the bettles were not the best band on that times, right now they are even better band than them... my expectations for this have dropped dramatically after this interview. I really was expecting 4 years of painstaking and better music.

"I'm aware of the fact that if there's a plane in the sky and it's over Manhattan and it's close to the anniversary of Sept. 11 it's a connection people might make," she said. "I wanted to wait long enough after the anniversary that people wouldn't make that connections but I can see how they could." http://www.mtsconverter.jp Plans for the skywriting were announced ahead of time , with Beck encouraging witnesses to email her photos. i think a lot more work has gone into the stereo remasters personally
id like to know just waht remastering they have done to the mono set as i think all they have done is transfer them from tape and thats it. mono is still the best way but ive changed my view in that the stereo versions sonically sound better brighter and crisper and just better. the mono,s sound dark by comparison

I like to listen my Beatles Mono. But sometime I prefer both just to change the test...

Because remastering doesn't mean remixing. It wouldn't be the albums everyone knows and loves if they were remixed. It's taking what is already complete and improving, not starting from scratch.

My expectations for this have dropped dramatically after this interview. I really was expecting 4 years of painstaking work but it really seems like they essentially copied the master mixes over to a digital format and did a little clean up. That is it. What a total disappointment. Apple I think has really blown it. They should have remixed them from the original tapes and not the already mixed masters. That would have really been worth listening to. But I feel many many fans are going to be really disappointed on 090909
